How progress & attainment is reported to parents at Corpus Christi
Firstly, it is important to say that children often learn at different rates of progress and can therefore have different rates of attainment compared to their Age Related Expectation (ARE). For example if a child has always found the work that they are expected to do for their age too difficult they won't necessarily be ready to learn the work for their age group. This is why it is important to always measure children's progress - this tells us how much they have learnt from their starting point no matter how 'far behind' their ARE they are.
Secondly, it is important that we are accurate with our assessments of the children and most schools around the country use assessment tools - these can be commercially bought in or can be created by the schools themselves.
So what is it that we use at Corpus Christi to assess your children? We use a software tool called STATSheffield online.
Using STATOnline to assess progress
We use 'steps' to show attainment - these steps will show you where, in relation to your child's ARE, they are working at at specific points within the academic year. For example; if your child is in Year 4 they will be working between steps 23 and 27. Step 23 will be the step that the majority of those children will enter year 4 at - it's very important to note that, as mentioned earlier, some children might not be ready to begin work at that stage just yet and will therefore be working at a lower stage than their peers. Gradually throughout the year they will progress onto steps 24, 25 and finally ending on step 26 - this would then be their entry point into Year 5. There may be a chance that some children progress onto step 27 - this would be seen as the children working at greater depth within that subject.
Take a look at the examples below that show the progression of the steps for each year group:
YEAR 1
Step | 15 | 16 | 17 | 18 | ||||
Appropriate Curriculum For Year 1 | This is the step most children would enter year 1 at from their time in reception. Most children will still be on this step up until the middle of the Spring Term. | Most children will reach this step by the end of the Spring term. | This step is where the children should be by the end of Year 1. This is what we call age related expectation or ARE. | There is a chance that some children may reach this step by the end of Year 1. This step is when children are working at a greater depth than the 'average' child |
YEAR 2
Step | 17 | 18 | 19 | 20 | 21 | |||

They will be on this step until the middle of the Spring Term (February) | Most children will reach this step by the end of the Spring term. | This step is where the children should be by the end of Year 2. This is what we call age related expectation or ARE. | There is a chance that some children may reach this step by the end of Year 2. This step is when children are working at a greater depth than the 'average' child |

This is what we call age related expectation or ARE. | There is a chance that some children may reach this step by the end of Year 3. This step is when children are working at a greater depth than the 'average' child |
