Phase 1 Journeys for leisure from previous centuries

Part A – Journeys for leisure during the Victorian Period (19th Century).

Part A – Journeys for leisure during the Victorian Period (19th Century).

Pupils will:

- locate the Victorian period on a timeline and understand it is not in living memory.

- be able to provide an example of a date from the Victorian period (1837-1901) and know that the Victorian period relates to the 19th Century.

- know that that the Victorian period relates to Queen Victoria and that her husband was called Prince Albert.

- understand that the growth of journeys for leisure purposes were linked to the development/expansion of a national  railway transport system.

- learn how much of today’s railway network originates from this period.

- know that the traditional seaside towns are rooted in the Victorian period and why these towns grew rapidly during this period - growth of the railways and how these towns promoted themselves e.g. health benefits of inhaling the sea air.

- visit a Victorian seaside town and experience some of the seaside Victorian traditions e.g. building sandcastles, Punch and Judy show.

- understand the bank holidays were introduced during the Victorian period to promote leisure.

- investigate locations in the local area that were visited by the working classes on bank holidays  e.g Earlswood Lakes, Lickey Hills – linked to transport network, trains and trams.

Part B – Journeys for leisure during the 20th Century.

Pupils will:

- locate the 20th Century on a timeline and understand that (mid and/or later 20th Century) is in living memory for the majority of their parents and their grandparents.

- be able to provide an example of a date from the 20th Century.

- learn that as families aspiration grew during the 20th Century so did the demand for affordable holiday and leisure opportunities.

- have an understanding of how people become more affluent in the mid and late 20th Century which enabled them to travel (own cars, growth of railway and introduction of the motorway networks) and how this led to increased opportunities for holidays/leisure.

- know that developments in the airline industry resulted in cheaper flights  and people travelling to Europe (particularly Spain) for their holiday – pupils learn about Freddie Laker, a British pioneer in low cost air travel.

- learn about the introduction of the ‘package’ holiday and formation of the travel agent and, where possible, will visit a travel agent to see the leisure destinations and opportunities now available.

Phase 2 - Journeys for leisure in the 21st Century

Phase 2 Journeys for leisure in the 21st Century

Pupils will:

- learn about the impact of the internet on revolutionising the holiday experience,- looking at reviews, comparing prices, and the range of holiday experiences available.

- examine how many people are journeying for leisure today to experience something different e.g. going on safari.

- examine the growth of the cruising culture in the 21st Century and its development from being an expensive holiday for the rich visiting destinations in Europe.

Phase 3 Journeys for leisure in the future

Pupils will:

- consider what a leisure journey in the future may be.

- investigate development in space travel and space tourism. - use their historical knowledge understand what needs to happen in order for people to make journeys to space for leisure purposes.
